Autoresponders – Pros and Cons

Why don’t many online business owners use an autoresponder? What barriers are there to setting one up? Why is this the most low tech tool serious marketers must have?

If you’re not currently using autoresponders for your business you’re leaving a lot of money on the table plus you’re not automating a large portion of your online business. After 10 years of marketing online I finally decided to use autoresponders. Why did it take so long to make a decision? Perhaps you’ll find the answer among the pros and cons listed below.

1. “Drip feed” information to prospects

The Grand Canyon was formed by the continuous grinding action of the Colorado River. Over 100 0s of years it slowly carved out a massive crevice in the earth’s layer. An autoresponder works in a similar way when it comes to building relationships with your customers. Instead of trying to sell to them immediately an autoresponder sends a series of messages delivered at pre-determined intervals. This helps prepare them to purchase your product.

2. Create life time customer value

It’s difficult to put a value on a customer but imagine if you’re able sell repeatedly to the same person over their lifetime. Studies show that it’s much easier to sell to people who have already bought from you than someone you’ve never met. One customer could be worth 1000s of dollars over the course of their lifetime.

3. Place your business on autopilot

Autoresponders automatically collect contact information from your sign up form and store it in a database. An email or a series of emails can be sent to your list or several lists. Autoresponder software keeps track of subscribes and unsubscribes. You control when you want to deliver your messages. This frees up time time to work on other areas of your business.

4. High deliverability rate

Some marketers make the mistake of hosting an autoresponder script on their server. Not all email may get delivered because major internet providers use filters to prevent spam complaints. Your email may trigger spam filters and not get delivered to your customers. Professional autoresponder companies such as Aweber have built relationships with these companies to make sure your email goes through.

5. Sell multiple products

One way to sell multiple products is to offer a weekly e-course. For instance each week send a short report, video or podcast to people who have paid for your course. Before they complete the course, offer another e-course that relates to your previous product. This enables you to sell multiple products on autopilot.
