Nowadays, starting an ECommerce store is quite simple, and it doesn’t need to cost you much money, if any money at all.
Obviously, the first thing you need to do is decide on the product(s) that you will be selling. If your looking into starting an ECommerce store you probably already know what they are. Next, you need to sign up for a hosting account. There are thousands upon thousands of host out there. One of, if not the most reliable host out there is Host Gator. Host Gator offers 24/7 live chat and phone support. You can’t beat that!
After you have your hosting account setup you will need to install a shopping cart onto your site. Log into your cPanel (hosting account) and scroll down to the bottom under Software/Services and click on QuickInstall. Then scroll down and on the left hand side you will see numerous FREE open source shopping carts readily available for your customization. Decide on which one you want, my personal favorites are OpenCart and ZenCart, but again, that’s just me. You can go with whichever cart you’d like.
Once you’ve chosen a cart, simply install it. After installation you will have a basic shopping cart website set up. Now, on to the fun part. You will need to customize this shopping cart to your liking. If you know code then your already way ahead of the game. If not, don’t be discouraged, there are many ways around this. There are tons of designers out there who are willing to help build your site for a small fee. You could also just Google search templates for whichever cart you have installed, for ex: OpenCart templates and find tons of ready made templates for you to choose from. Once, you’ve chosen a template you’ll have to download it (some templates are free and some may cost you a few dollars) to your computer. Upon completion of the download you have to install the template onto your site. This is done via an FTP program such as File Zilla. DO NOT be intimated by FTP it is simply a file sharing program. Google how to FTP and you’ll find tons of info on it. The screen will show your computer and “remote server” aka your website. All that you have to do is connect (via FTP) and drag your downloaded template files into their corresponding folders on your site. Simple as that!
Now, you have your hosting account, FREE open source shopping cart installed, and your custom or custom purchased template installed. Next, is the easy(ier) part. It times to add your products! This will depend on the cart you have but it is a very simple process. Most carts have an internet forum accompanying them with a wealth of information and helpful individuals that will guide you every step of the way.
